Recovery of Skipper Ted Carbery’s Body – A New Account

While it was always known that students from Queen’s University Belfast’s Sub Aqua Club were involved in the search for bodies, a new account was just passed on by some of those divers. We would like to acknowledge their part in the recovery of Ted’s body, and give them recognition for their role in the search for the crew.

My name is Dr Doros Michail. In November 1976 I was the Diving Officer of the Queen’s University Sub Aqua Club Belfast. The day after the tragedy, I was contacted by local people at the Glencolumbkille Hotel whom I was acquainted with and asked if the Queen’s University Sub Aqua Club could assist in the search and recovery operations.

The next day, myself together with five other divers Eileen Kelly Jim Lenfesty Brian Lynch Bernard Picton and Robert Magee travelled to Glencolumbkille with our inflatable boat and diving equipment.

The next day, we carried out dives at the location of the wrecked Carrig Una, descending to depths of nearly 40m and swimming into the galleys of Black Rock area. Brian Lynch and Jim Lenfesty found and recovered the body of Mr Carbery. The body of the unlucky deceased was brought into our inflatable and transferred to one of the larger boats nearby.

All five of the divers are with us and indeed three of us are still actively diving. All five can attest to what I have described.

With the 50th anniversary of this tragic event approaching, I feel the record should be set straight and the contribution of the Queen’s University Sub-Aqua and especially of Dr Brian Lynch and Dr Jim Lenfesty be recognised in a similar way to the Garda Divers and all others involved in the search and recovery operations.

Can I personally say that the event remains indelible in my mind to this day and every November, I remember and reflect on this tragic event and the brave fisherment who perished.
